    Did you know that Switzerland, Austria and Norway rank as the top three countries in the world in terms of total generation of hydropower by area? Or that China, Brazil and Canada rank 26th, 45th and 51st respectively in the same list? In our new interactive map, you can explore hydropower generation density around the world by km².

      Maria Van Der Hoeven on doubling world capacity by 2050

    Maria Van Der Hoeven is the executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). In this interview, she discusses hydro's role in the world's energy future, and challenges for sustainably doubling world capacity: "Certainly the target in our roadmap is ambitious: more than 7,000 TWh of hydropower generation by 2050."

      Bhutan and hydropower: can public happiness drive policy?

    In a country that measures gross domestic happiness rather than gross domestic produce, run-of-river hydropower provides for almost all of the energy demand, with an electrification rate of 99 per cent.
