The Institute has been conducting research in support of hydropower since the early 1960s. Its research and development activities cover methods for designing and analysing flow systems of water turbines, development of measurement and diagnostic methods, investigation of cavitation, cavitation erosion and water hammer phenomena, as well as prevention and mitigation of the effects of these phenomena. Its service activities include expert assessments, design work, and energy and diagnostic testing of hydro-units in hydropower plants.

PGE Energia Odnawialna operates in the field of hydropower, utilising water resources for the production and storage of electricity. The company manages 29 run-of-river hydropower plants and 4 pumped-storage power plants with a combined capacity of 1,542 MW, including the largest facilities in Poland — Żarnowiec at approximately 716 MW and Porąbka-Żar at 540 MW. The plants not only generate energy from renewable sources, but also stabilise the national power system by storing surplus energy.
The company operates a combined energy and water management system, administering the infrastructure built in connection with the construction of the Czorsztyn-Niedzica and Sromowce Wyżne reservoir complex. Its primary function is to protect the Dunajec valley from the effects of flooding and drought. This function is financed from revenues generated by the sale of electricity produced at the Niedzica pumped-storage power plant and five run-of-river plants on the Dunajec and Vistula rivers. The company supports the security and reliability of the National Power System by providing the black start ancillary service and fulfilling its capacity obligation.
